"Shellfishing without litter" on World Oceans Day: youth action on plastic pollution

Junio 08 2018 @ 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM

Since march 2016, Ocean Alive undertakes the “Shellfishing without litter” campaign, which consists in monthly awareness and beach cleaning actions in the Sado estuary engaging volunteers, stakeholders and particularly, local fisherwomen.

In Portugal, young people aged 15-18 years old have negative behaviours and disregard the marine litter problem. In order to tackle this issue, on the 8th of June we will dedicate to an awareness and beach cleaning action of the Sado estuary margins engaging 75 students of this age group from local schools.

This action has the support of UNESCO-IGCP National Committee as institutional partner. It will be made in partnership with Setúbal and Palmela Municipalities, Barbosa du Bocage and Palmela middle schools, Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World and is sponsored by Iami and El Cristo.

Harnessing the Power of People to Fight Ocean Trash

The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. The movement was catalyzed by the passion and spirit of two committed individuals. Back in 1986, Linda Maraniss moved to Texas from Washington, DC, where she had been working for Ocean Conservancy.
