The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) joins the global community in marking World Oceans Day with the theme: Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean. This is more necessary than ever before, as human activities place unprecedented stress on the ocean, which covers more than 70% of the Earth surface, regulates the global climate and provides food and livelihoods for billions of people.
For World Oceans Day, WMO has released a history of the marine partnership between WMO and the IOC-UNESCO. This is part of the WMO@70 series celebrating our 70th Anniversary and is a special edition also honouring the 60th Anniversary of the IOC. It highlights the interesting evolution of the ocean work at WMO and IOC in frontier ocean and meteorological science for services.
WMO has also released a new public awareness animation explaining the value of ocean buoys and the need to protect them from damage, in order to contribute to everyone’s safety. This is the second in a cartoon series, the first on coastal inundation is here.
In the spirit of the ‘innovation’ theme, read more about the impressive variety of ocean activities being carried out across WMO.
