Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme: A Journey for Climate Hope

In 2017, Peace Boat began a new programme to amplify the voices and experiences of young people from small island states around the world to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change and ocean degradation. For the third year in a row, Peace Boat will this year once again organize this Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme, with a group of eight youth from the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean embarking on Peace Boat’s 101st Global Voyage. The trip will start in Valletta, Malta on May 24, and end in New York City, the United States just in time for World Oceans Day 2019. Other ports visited will include Motril and Granada (Spain), Tangiers (Morocco) and Ponta Delgada (Portugal).

The Youth Ambassadors for 2019 are Eparama Qerewaqa (Fiji), Tapua Pasuna (Tuvalu), Elsei Tellei (Palau), Nathaniel Soon (Singapore), Nathalia Lawen (Seychelles), Jevanic Henry (Saint Lucia), Ashneil Jeffers (Montserrat) and Khadija Stewart (Trinidad and Tobago). They will engage in capacity building and bring their message to citizens and government representatives through the voyage. During their time onboard, they will be joined by guest educators like Laura Hildebrandt, Policy Specialist & MY World Manager in the SDG Action Campaign, and Brandon Levy, Programme Director of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA).

Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme was first launched at the United Nations Ocean Conference in 2017, and recognized by the COP23 Presidency Secretariat as an Endorsed Event of COP23. A second edition was held in 2018 which concluded at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations. The programme highlights the stories and experiences of young people at the forefront of injustices brought about by climate change, amplifying their voices calling for action. Press conferences, public events and meetings with government representatives are organized in the different countries the youth visit with Peace Boat. After the voyage, participants go on to use the experience and knowledge gained onboard and in ports to contribute to their communities and internationally, continuing to pass on their message and raise awareness.
